Installing Mono Tools for Visual Studio
Requirements:
- Windows XP, Vista, or 7, 32 or 64 bits
- Visual Studio 2008 SP1 Standard or Professional
- VMWare Player (http://www.vmware.com/download/player/) or Virtual PC (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/)
There are two pieces to install for Mono Tools for Visual Studio:
- An addin for Visual Studio. Download the Windows installer (.msi) from the Mono Tools download page (http://www.go-mono.com/monotools/download/)

- A server that runs on Linux. You can configure your own Linux server to host the Mono Tools server (monovs-server), or use one of the following options to download a preconfigured virtual image:
- Installer for VMware and Virtual PC images (http://ftp.novell.com/pub/mono/monovs/latest/MonoVS-vm.exe)
- The VMware image (http://ftp.novell.com/pub/mono/monovs/latest/MonoVS-vmx.zip) only
- The Virtual PC image (http://ftp.novell.com/pub/mono/monovs/latest/MonoVS-vpc.zip) only
Note: We recommend using VMWare as we have observed performance and responsiveness issues on Virtual PC.
Installing the Windows Software
- Make sure all copies of Visual Studio 2008 are closed!
- Double click the Windows installer (.msi).
- Follow the installer instructions.
Using the Linux Image
- Unzip either the VMWare (-vmx.zip) or Vitual PC (-vpc.zip) image.
- Start up the image.
- MonoVS-0.x.xxxx.vmx for VMWare (where x is the version number)
- MonoVS-0.x.xxxx.vmc for Virtual PC (where x is the version number)
- The image should launch the Mono Tools server on startup.
- (Denoted by a mono icon in the tray in the bottom right on the Linux desktop.)
Installing the Linux Server Component on openSUSE or SLE
As an alternative to the VMWare or Virtual PC image, you may install the server component on an existing openSUSE 11.1 or SLE 11 system.
- Use the openSUSE 1click from your Linux system:
